Research shows that building good eating habits from a young age helps prevent chronic diseases of the lifestyle later on when they are older such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Healthy nutrition in kids boosts their immune system and prevents opportunistic infections. It supports brain development, especially with a diet rich in a variety of foods. A South African study showed most children under the age of 9 years lack vitamin A, iron, fibre and calcium. Foods rich in iron are chicken livers (add to mince), eggs, beans and dark leafy vegetables. Good food sources of vitamin A are carrots, pumpkin and orange sweet potatoes. Calcium aids strong bones, nerve conduction, heals wounds and muscle contraction. Foods like maas, yoghurt, and milk are good sources of both calcium and protein. A good rule of thumb is to replace all fruit juice with milk or yoghurt. Eating a good, balanced diet will ensure your child will grow optimally and strong!
