Hypertension is linked to excessive sodium (salt) intake.  Sodium encourages the body to retain fluid, increasing blood volume and raising blood pressure.  Sodium is the main component of table salt, so it is imperative to replace salt with other flavourings such as herbs, spices, vinegar, tomato paste, lemon, curries, to name a few.  Reducing salt can help lower blood pressure and improve heart health.  Limiting processed foods and increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables has been proven to lower hypertension.  There is a well-known diet called the DASH diet (Dietary Approach to Stopping Hypertension) which has been proven to lower high blood pressure.  This diet includes eating healthier fats from plants such as olive oil, avocado and nuts.  By lowering saturated fats and increasing fibre from wholegrains, brown rice, legumes and oats this diet can improve cardiovascular health.
