This week we are celebrating National Nutrition Week and the theme this year is ‘Eat right for a better life!’. Eating around the table as a family can make a significant difference to your health and mental well-being. It does not have to be difficult for you and your family to achieve this. Simple strategies such as structured mealtimes can improve health outcomes significantly!
Several studies have shown that eating with the family more frequently will result in improved psychological benefits. It helps kids feel more safe and secure which then allows them to talk freely about things that they would not have if they were eating alone or around the TV for example.
Eating together allows the family to feel more connected. It also allows parents to model healthy eating behaviour. Research shows that children will eventually eat whatever their parents eat regardless of their eating habits. The eating behaviour around the table should always be positive and parents should use this time to connect.
Eating better by planning meals ahead of time will save you time and allow for more quality time with your kids around the table. This takes a bit of planning, but the rewards will be great! Encourage the kids to join in with purchasing and preparation of food. They will feel encouraged and develop skills they will use in the future!
