FIBRE:
Eating a high-fibre diet is vital to improve and maintain overall good health. Hippocrates our father of medicine, said, ‘All disease begins in the gut’. Here are a few easy ways to focus on your fibre!
Good sources of fibre include:
• oats
• all legumes (beans)
• all fruits such as apples, berries, mangoes etc
• all vegetables! Include the skin on most vegetables to increase fibre!
• psyllium husk. This is a great fibre to add to baking, cereal or smoothie!
• whole-grain flour, including almond, oat bran, whole-wheat, etc
• nuts & seeds! Chia seeds are great to help aid constipation.
Some tips:
• Make a hearty soup with broth, carrots, barley, peas, and beans for a filling and healthy meal.
• Snack on apples, oranges, or grapefruit when craving something sweet.
• Start your day with whole grain toast, oatmeal, or a fibrous cereal for breakfast.
• When baking, replace some or all flour with whole-wheat or oat bran flour.
• Have nuts on hand for a healthy snack.
• Buy fresh or frozen vegetables at the shops. Rinse and chop them as soon as you get home, and keep them on hand to steam or eat raw as a snack or side dish to a meal.
